General Scan MK1 — FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about the General Scan MK1, from workflow and compatibility to setup and image quality.
What is the General Scan MK1?
General Scan MK1 is a modular, high-speed film scanning system designed for photographers, labs, and enthusiasts who want maximum image quality without wasting time on scanning.
What makes it different from traditional scanners?
Unlike flatbed or legacy lab scanners, the MK1 uses a camera-based system with precision film transport.
This results in:
significantly higher resolution
faster scanning speeds
full control over the image (RAW)
Who is it for?
Professional labs handling high volumes
Photographers shooting film regularly
Advanced enthusiasts who want full control
Which film formats are supported?
35mm
Medium format (6×4.5 up to 6×9)
Do I need to switch hardware between formats?
No. The magnetic carriers snap in instantly — no screws, no tools.
Can I scan slide film?
Yes, but currently without automatic frame detection. A semi-manual workflow is used.
How fast is the scanner?
A full 35mm roll with 36 frames can be scanned in under a minute.
Is the process fully automated?
Yes, for standard negatives:
automatic film transport
frame detection
precise positioning
The wireless controller lets you manage the entire process without being physically attached to the scanner once the film is inserted.
What happens with difficult negatives (underexposed, damaged)?
If the sensors fail, advance to the next frame manually via the controller and press “Play” again.
For slide film or film shot in challenging lighting conditions, a semi-automatic mode allows you to measure the distance between frames and then start scanning via the “Play” button. The device stores this setting until it is switched off.
What determines the image quality?
The quality depends on:
your camera (e.g. Fujifilm GFX 100 II)
lens setup
lighting (high CRI, even diffusion)
How does it compare to lab scanners like Frontier or Noritsu?
higher raw detail and dynamic range
no baked-in look
full control over color grading
Does it include automatic color conversion?
A dedicated software solution is currently in development to convert negatives to positives with intelligent color and exposure handling.
In the meantime, you can use tools like Negative Lab Pro or Capture One.
Do I need special equipment?
You need:
a digital camera (we recommend at least 40+ MP)
a macro lens (1:1 magnification is recommended to fully utilize the sensor resolution)
a stable mount or tripod
How are the scanner and controller connected?
The scanner and controller communicate wirelessly via WiFi.
There is no physical cable between them, allowing for a clean and flexible setup.
How is the system powered?
The scanner runs on a 24V power supply
The controller is powered via USB
This means the controller can also be powered by a power bank for maximum flexibility.
Can I control it remotely?
Yes. The WiFi controller allows you to operate the scanner from your desktop — or anywhere in your workspace.
Is there a built-in software solution?
A dedicated app is currently in development:
negative → positive conversion
lab workflow management
client delivery system
Can labs integrate this into their workflow?
Yes. The system is designed with lab workflows in mind:
batch processing
client-based organization
scalable file handling
Why was the General Scan MK1 created?
Because existing solutions are either:
too slow
too limited
or not built for modern workflows
The MK1 was built from the ground up by photographers and engineers to solve real-world problems.
Who built it?
Nick Frank — photographer & visual strategist
Jan Hausmann — engineer & system builder
